About us

Driven by family values and a commitment to quality, our work often follows a careful path from one set of family hands to another.

SABRE is a family business. John has an extensive background in horticulture and agriculture, Piet in residential and commercial construction, Jan in civil and earthworks and Adam in finance, investment and commercial property. Sophia and Milenka specialise in interior and landscape design respectively.

Combining practical hands-on experience with business acumen has proven a recipe for success. Our work is often repeated business, which for us is the ultimate accolade.

Willingness to work hard for both the business and for our clients is in our DNA. Our word is our bond and an old fashioned hand shake means a lot. For our clients this means delivery to expectations, time-frames and budget.

We have a close knit culture at SABRE. When you come on board as either our client or team member, you get treated like family. Direct, open and honest communication are essential and our management team or family are always on hand to problem solve.

The breadth of skills and experience we offer means that we can often easily achieve in-house what other construction companies may have to outsource.

We look forward to working with you.

SABRE / Blackridge Group

With over 25+ years’ experience in commercial business development, Adam manages the broader picture for the Blackridge/SABRE group of development and construction companies. He is responsible for managing all aspects of investment and asset acquisition for the group, whilst retaining a focus on the overall management and delivery of projects for the group’s clients.

His strategic nature means he’s always looking for the right angle and opportunity to bring different parties together to collaborate. Adam holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Economics & Financial Management.

“I love working with all our businesses – our people, our partnerships with clients and suppliers, the ever challenging environment they operate in. Their growth and sustainability drives me every day.”

Director

Jan Holwerda

SABRE / Blackridge Group

Jan is passionate about project quality and reliability and firmly believes his people are the source of SABRE’S strength. Fostering a team orientated approach, he leads a dedicated crew. Jan’s career started in rural contracting and horticultural developments before he moved to Australia to work in the mining sector in Western Australia and Queensland.

SABRE’s clients now directly benefit from his experience in large construction projects offshore.

His wide range of skills and expertise are an asset when translated to New Zealand’s evolving landscape.

“We’ve moved mountains, filled gullies and created blank canvases for our clients to create subdivisions, towns and industrial buildings. Creating the best possible platform for future trades to work with is always forefront of mind.”

Director

Piet Holwerda

SABRE / Blackridge Group

A Licensed Building Practitioner, Piet has been involved in infrastructure projects in commercial, residential and industrial construction for over 15 years.

Because of his own experience on the tools, Piet brings a very hands on approach to any project undertaken and enjoys being able to evaluate and

value engineer all projects from a very practical perspective. His out of the box thinking is ideal for projects that require specific staging of works or have tight deadlines. Thriving under pressure and enjoying leading his delivery team to achieve timelines and budgets, his attention to detail enables him to intercept any possible issues before they arise.

“Seeing the evolution of a great project from idea through to completion is a great feeling. There’s a strong sense of satisfaction that comes with knowing you’ve handed over the best building possible. Knowing that it’s built to last and people will inhabit it for years to come.”

Director

John Holwerda

SABRE / Blackridge Group

John has successfully developed a variety of businesses in the agricultural and horticultural sector over the past 40+ years ranging from dairy farming to export marketing, manufacturing, kiwifruit and construction.

John oversees the rural side of our business offering clients invaluable advice and making sure their exact needs are met.

As he’s always had his hands in the soil, John sees projects from our clients’ point of view. He is a lateral thinker with an exceptional work ethic and loves to use his knowledge of both construction and the land to add value to each and every project.

“We add value by being able to do more for our clients. An orchardist doesn’t want just an orchard built or crop protection. They also want farm buildings, earthworks and structures. We do more than what we were originally contracted to do and that’s where the long term relationship starts.”
